Hear and Now on HBO!
Now showing on HBO is the all new documentary, Hear and Now. Hear and Now is about 65-year-old Paul and Sally Taylor and their decision to be implanted with Cochlear Implants (CIs) just before retirement. The film is written and directed by the couple’s daughter, Irene Taylor Brodsky. When Brodsky learns of her parents’ decision to undergo surgery to “fix their hearing,” she is unsure of what lies ahead. She can’t help but wonder what this newfound sense will do to her parents. The surgery could be a success and leave Brodsky with two hearing parents. It could also flop and turn into a massive disappointment or regret. Or, the surgery could effect each of her parents differently and create a level of separation that’s never been experienced.
If you're interested in d/Deaf culture, this is a great film for you. So often deafness is portrayed as a disability or an illness that needs curing. In the eyes of people everywhere, cochlear implants have recently become that cure. For a person with no background or knowledge of CI’s, there can often be a misconception that the surgery will eliminate deafness and all sounds will emerge flawlessly. This film makes the assertion that this is not always the case. Not every implant surgery will be successful, and the level of success will vary from person to person.
Here and Now allows you to join two individuals on their journey from the deaf world of which they are accustomed, to a whole new world of hearing.
